UK Prime Minister’s Armored Range Rover Sentinels Will Continue To Run On Petrol Due To Electric Variant’s ‘Blast Anxiety’

UK Prime Minister’s Armored Range Rover Sentinels will continue to Run on petrol as EV Variant can’t offer adequate ‘Blast Protection’.

JLR told UK government that the required safety levels and blast protection cannot be achieved in armored EV.

Because of this, JLR said ‘Special Purpose Vehicles’ (SPV) should be exempted from the 2030 internal combustion ban.

To offer protection, armoured vehicles are usually fitted with bulletproof glass, armour plating, and “bomb blankets” under the floor.

The fleet of armored Range Rover Sentinels used to transport UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, and other senior ministers will continue to run on petrol as Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) fears an armoured EV is not ‘technically feasible’, according to a documents obtained by Fast Charge.

While addressing the issue in written responses to a government consultation on EV sales rules, JLR said ‘Special Purpose Vehicles’ (SPV) should be exempted from the 2030 internal combustion ban, known as the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate.

In documents seen by The Fast Charge, JLR told officials in its submission to the Department for Transport that it “does not see any workable engineering solution to the challenges surrounding an armoured BEV (Battery Electric Vehicles), primarily because the required safety levels and blast protection cannot be achieved.”

JLR said the UK government was the main customer in Britain for its armoured vehicles, which are usually fitted with bulletproof glass, armour plating, and “bomb blankets” under the floor.

“The UK Government are the customer base in the UK for this product. We are pleased that the Government agrees with this exclusion.”
