Three police officers were injured on Friday afternoon when a marked police vehicle crashed while responding to a fire report in Piparo.
Around 4:45 p.m. Sgt. Bassarath, PC Gilbert and WPC Jackson all attached to the Princes Town Police Station, were travelling in marked police vehicle, a Toyota Hilux, en route to a fire at the Children’s Authority building in Piparo.
On approaching the incline and bend after the bridge along Lower Piparo Road, PC Gilbert, who was driving, reportedly lost consciousness. The vehicle veered off course and collided with a concrete retaining wall on the northern side of the roadway, sustaining damage to its left front side.
PC Gilbert was quickly taken to the Princes Town District Health Facility by PC Rampersad of the Extortion Unit, who was in the vicinity at the time. Emergency Health Services also responded, providing on-site medical aid before transferring Sgt. Bassarath and WPC Jackson to the San Fernando General Hospital.
Hospital officials later confirmed that Bassarath and PC Gilbert remain warded in stable condition, while WPC Jackson was treated and discharged.
