Google’s Pixel smartphones are known to be some of the best in the industry; however, this new issue is pretty concerning and might make you think twice before picking up this older phone. According to a new report, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro now appear to have a swelling battery issue.

A user on the Google Pixel forum reported his issue. “I am writing to report a serious issue with my Pixel 7 Pro, which I purchased approximately two years ago. Recently, I noticed that the side panel of the device has started to separate, as clearly shown in the attached photo. Upon closer inspection, it appears the battery may be swelling, posing a significant safety risk, including the potential for explosion or fire.” After this was written, others have added their issues with the Pixel 7 series’ swelling batteries.

One user reported that when they took their handset to the repair shop, they were told the swelling caused the screen to detach and it means the phone will need a screen replacement.

The forum also indicates that the Google support teams have had different responses to the issue. Some users have been told to send pictures of all six sides of their handset. One user received a reimbursement for a third-party battery replacement. Another user said Google offered a free repair and would completely replace the handset if repairs couldn’t be made.

Google hasn’t made an official statement about this issue, but with more complaints being made, it’s possible the company could release a statement. In Australia, the Pixel 4a was recalled due to a battery overheating issue. And we’ve heard other Pixels have experienced battery issues, such as the Pixel 6a and even a Rogers customers saying his Pixel 8 caught on fire.
