The Audi E5 electric wagon is off to a strong start in China, securing 10,000 orders in just 30 minutes. It validates the German brand’s decision to launch a standalone battery-powered model in the world’s largest auto market.

The E5 Sportback, sporting a revised Audi logo, was first released as a concept. However, in an interesting twist, the production model is offering 11 hp more power. The top trim can generate 776 hp from its two electric motors, enough for a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 3.4 seconds. The entry-level model is rated 295 hp.

In terms of driving range, many will agree that the Audi E5 Sportback offers value for money. The base model, starting at just $33,000, can travel 385 miles (CLTC standard) on a 75 kWh battery, while the top-end model can last 402 miles on its 100 kWh battery. The flagship model starts at $45,000.

Audi decided to align with the Chinese design ethos with the E5, setting it apart from the brand’s Western offerings. Inside, there is a 59-inch wide screen running from one side of the dashboard to the other. The display is flanked by two digital side mirrors. Other cabin features include wireless phone chargers and Alcantara finishing.

The E5 Sportback was co-developed with SAIC and will be at a SAIC-Volkswagen facility in Shanghai.
