After a recent demotion from its long-running rank as the busiest Canada-U.S. trade crossing, the Ambassador Bridge announced it will begin cutting its toll rates by almost half for some vehicles.

An updated chart recently added on the Ambassador Bridge website shows tolls for Premier card holders — a prepaid, reloadable membership — will be reduced starting Sunday, April 19. The newest announcement comes after the privately owned international crossing increased its tolls earlier this year.

Premier cardholders will now pay US$5.50, which is equivalent to about C$7.50.

The change brings the cost for cardholders 25 cents below the recently announced Gordie Howe International Bridge’s rates for all passenger vehicles.

In March, the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority announced the highly-anticipated rates for the Gordie Howe International Bridge. All passenger vehicle drivers will pay a standard toll of C$8 (US$5.75) per crossing. The bridge also launched a discounted toll program for individuals and families earlier this month.

The cuts also bring some tolls at the Ambassador Bridge closer to Nexpress rates at the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, where passenger vehicles pay C$9.25 (US$6.75) to travel from Detroit to Windsor, and C$5.90 (US$4.70) from Windsor to Detroit.

Cash and credit card rates at the Ambassador Bridge remain otherwise unchanged. Drivers will continue paying US$10 or C$14 in cash.

A spokesperson for the Ambassador Bridge company did not respond to the Star’s request for comment before Wednesday’s print deadline.

The toll changes follos recent reporting by the Star that the Moroun family, owners of the privately held Ambassador Bridge, lobbied and donated millions to U.S. officials in an effort to stall the competing Gordie Howe bridge.

The Ambassador Bridge has also recently ceded its long-held title as the busiest Canada-U.S. commercial land crossing to the Blue Water Bridge in Sarnia.

According to data from the Bridge and Tunnel Operators Association, the Ambassador Bridge saw 1,858,824 trucks last year, compared to the Blue Water Bridge’s 2,132,839.
