A five-year-old child is dead after an ATV they were driving hit a tree in Brudenell, Lyndoch and Raglan Township on Saturday.

The Upper Ottawa Valley detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police has opened an investigation into the single-vehicle crash that police said occurred at a private property. Just after 11 a.m., police, Renfrew County paramedics and the BLR Fire Department responded after the collision that involved a tracked ATV.

The child, who police said was the lone operator of the ATV, was wearing a helmet when the vehicle struck the tree. The child was taken to a local hospital before being moved by air ambulance to a regional trauma centre, where they succumbed to their injuries.

A post mortem has been scheduled and the investigation was continuing, police said.
