April 07, (THEWILL) — American rapper Montero Lamar Hill, better known as Lil Nas X, has been allowed by a California judge to enter a mental health diversion program following his arrest last August.

Hill, 26, was charged with three counts of battery on a police officer and one count of resisting arrest after being found nearly naked on Ventura Boulevard in Los Angeles. He was also hospitalized over concerns of a possible overdose.

At a hearing on Monday, April 6, Judge Alan Schneider said the charges could be dropped if Hill completes the program and obeys the law for the next two years.

“I’m thankful. Just very thankful. It could have been much worse,” Hill said after the hearing.

The Grammy-winning “Old Town Road” star was diagnosed with bipolar disorder following the incident. His lawyer, Christy O’Connor, said the judge described his behavior at the time as “aberrant from his normal conduct” and noted he “appears to be doing very well.”

Diversion programs help people with mental health conditions, learning disabilities, or substance abuse issues avoid traditional criminal sentencing and receive proper treatment.

Hill’s father, Robert Stafford, said his son has faced tremendous pressure, especially due to his mother’s struggles with addiction. “For a 26-year-old to have to deal with what he’s dealing with… that can weigh heavily on your heart,” he told the Times.

Since his arrest, Hill spent two months in a treatment facility in Arizona.
