Police were called to the incident over the Oxfordshire border in Berkshire on Wednesday morning, November 26 in Calcot.

A man aged in his 60s was crossing the A4 Bath Road, near to the Lidl superstore when it is believed he was involved in a collision with at least one vehicle.

Members of the public stayed with the man but despite the best efforts of emergency services, he died of his injuries at the scene.

The road was closed for investigation work between Mill Lane and Hogarth Avenue, but re-opened yesterday evening.

A 41-year-old man from Reading who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving has since been released under investigation.

Traffic officer sergeant Matt Cadmore said: “We are still in the early stages of this investigation, but we are now able to provide a little more information, which may help to jog the memory of anybody who may have witnessed what happened.

“We now believe the man was crossing the road near to the Lidl at 6.30am when he was struck by a vehicle.

“It is possible that more than one vehicle may have been involved, but the driver or drivers involved may not have been aware of this, as the incident occurred in hours of darkness.

“I am re-appealing today to anybody who was in the area and believe that they witnessed the incident to please get in touch.

“Were you driving in the area and did you see a man crossing the road at around 6.30am? Did you see something in the road at around the same time?

“If so, I would urge you to please get in touch with Thames Valley Police, as even the smallest piece of information may assist us in understanding what has happened.

“My thoughts remain with the family of the man who has died, who are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers at this extremely distressing time.”
