A 32-year-old man is being treated for dog bites after allegedly assaulting a cab driver, stealing two vehicles and ramming into police cruisers during a pursuit that ended south of Saskatoon early Wednesday morning.

Police said it all started around 6:40 a.m. when a man hit a store in the 1500 block of 22nd Street in a stolen taxi before robbing the store and filling it with bear spray.

An hour later, he stole a F550 truck involved in sewer work near Wiggins Avenue and Cascade Street in the city’s Adelaide/Churchill neighbourhood, according to a news release.

During a police news conference on Wednesday, spokesperson Kelsie Fraser said the man approached the private contractors on a bicycle, got inside their work truck and took off.

The driver refused to stop, striking police vehicles twice as he drove south of the city onto Valley Road. Police said two officers fired shots during the chase, and a police vehicle eventually hit and immobilized the stolen white work truck.

Police said the suspect wasn’t cooperative and had to be forcefully removed.

Fraser couldn’t say how many officers were dispatched, how many vehicles were damaged, or whether the suspect was known to police, because that information was still being gathered.

She said a lot of ground was covered during the two-hour incident.

“The suspect drove dangerously through the downtown, through residential neighbourhoods, through school zones at a very busy time of day,” Fraser told reporters, adding that thankfully, no one was hurt.

Kaz Daigneault appeared in Saskatoon provincial court Thursday afternoon. He’s charged with four counts each of assaulting a police officer and robbery, two counts of hit and run, and one count each of assault with a weapon, vehicle theft, evade police, impaired driving, dangerous driving, mischief and breach of both a release and probation order.
