Better picture, with less power

Samsung Display and Intel have teamed up on new OLED technology that the tech giants claim can help improve battery life when using HDR.
Named SmartPower HDR, the tech giants claim the new technology can minimize power consumption while watching HDR content on an OLED screen.
Now, this isn’t the first time Intel has shown off this technology, but Samsung Display is finally revealing the details of how it works and the expected power savings. Interestingly, there is no word yet on which laptops will get SmartPower HDR, so it is unclear what it will actually be used for.
With SmartPower HDR, Samsung Display notes that the laptop’s chipset monitors the peak brightness of each rendered frame in real time. Then, the OLED panel’s timing controller chip uses the data and the ratio of active pixels to find the optimal driving voltage for the panel.
Samsung Display also notes that SmartPower HDR can reduce OLED power consumption by up to 22 per cent in general use and up to 17 per cent when HDR content is displayed on the screen. Samsung Display also notes that, in general usage scenarios (e.g., emails), power consumption is similar to that in HDR mode.
Personally, I would love to see Samsung bring this to its TVs and monitors at some point to take advantage of similar power-saving capabilities. After all, the marketing for a more efficient TV is right there.
