Public transport giant Super Metro has confirmed it is working alongside law enforcement following a late-night tragedy in Kitengela that claimed the life of a 25-year-old man. The incident, which occurred on the night of February 24, 2026, has sparked intense public debate over passenger safety and the conduct of public service vehicle (PSV) crews.

In an official statement released Tuesday, the operator acknowledged the gravity of the situation involving one of its buses.

“We are cooperating fully with law enforcement and the National Transport and Safety Authority as they conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the incident. Currently the matter remains under investigation,” the company stated.

A Confrontation on the Highway

The events unfolded around 11 p.m. as the bus, registration number KDK 060H, headed from Kitengela toward Nairobi’s Central Business District with 32 passengers on board. According to the company, a group of agitated boda boda riders intercepted the vehicle, alleging that the conductor had pushed a passenger out of the moving bus.

The claims reportedly took those inside the vehicle by surprise.

“This came as a surprise to all on board. According to preliminary information, the incident resulted to a fatality,” the company added.

Currently, the bus remains impounded at the Athi River Police Station. Both the driver and the conductor are in police custody as detectives work to piece together the moments leading up to the young man’s death.

Family Demands Justice for Joseph Mureithi

The deceased has been identified as Joseph Mureithi. His grieving family presents a harrowing account of the night’s events, alleging that the bus crew deliberately ejected Mureithi from the vehicle. They further claim that the bus ran over him along the Kitengela–Namanga Highway and sped off without stopping.

Mureithi was rushed to Shalom Hospital but was tragically pronounced dead on arrival. His relatives describe him as a hardworking and devoted son who had recently started a new job to support his ailing mother’s medical expenses.

Beyond the police probe, Super Metro has initiated an internal review to scrutinize its own protocols. The firm stated that this process will identify if any internal policies were breached and determine how to bolster safety for its commuters.

The company also expressed its sympathies to the victim’s family:

“As a company we are deeply saddened by the reported loss of life, and our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of those who are affected. Safety of our passengers, employees, and communities is our major concern. We remain committed to transparency, accountability, and the safety of everyone who interacts with our services.”
