The 2025 State of the Mobile Compressed Air Industry Report has been released by VMAC. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of service vehicles, air compressor technology, and business outlooks across North America. Compiled from responses by professionals across the construction, equipment repair, and municipal services industries.
VMAC’s State Of The Industry report has become a trusted resource for benchmarking and planning, helping companies evaluate their operations in comparison to their peers. This year’s report explores critical topics including fleet composition, equipment preferences, fuel types, air compressor usage, battery tool adoption, and top business concerns.
Insights in the 2025 State Of The Industry report
Air compressors remain the most essential equipment on service vehicles, with 32 percent of respondents identifying them as the single most critical component. Rotary screw compressors remain the preferred choice for 72 percent of users, praised for their performance, continuous airflow, and compact size. UNDERHOOD air compressors remain a strong contender, though above-deck gas engine-driven compressors have taken a slight lead in popularity this year.
Other key findings include a decline in service van adoption, increased investment in newer fleet vehicles, and continued concerns about electric vehicle reliability. While 58 percent of businesses cite skilled labour shortages as a leading concern (down from 72 percent last year), respondents also report unease about tariffs (49 percent) and a potential economic slowdown (48 percent). Despite these challenges, 82 percent of respondents believe that business conditions will either improve or remain steady over the next 12 months.
“We are proud to share this year’s report, which reflects the current state of the mobile compressed air industry and offers valuable perspective for business leaders across North America,” said Tod Gilbert, president of VMAC. “The 2025 survey results highlight both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the industry.”
“Each year, we update the survey to better reflect the issues facing mobile compressed air professionals,” said Mike Pettigrew, marketing manager at VMAC. “From evolving technology preferences to economic uncertainty, this year’s data underscores how resilient and forward-thinking this industry continues to be.”
