Saskatoon police, in a news release, said they tried to stop the vehicle he was driving at the intersection of 21st Street West and Avenue P South around 10:30 p.m Monday night. At the same time, officers noticed another vehicle with a “falsely displayed licence plate” nearby.

Both drivers refused to stop, eventually heading in different directions. One came to a stop near 17th Street West and Avenue H South, in the Riversdale neighbourhood, after driving through a spike belt.

“However, the vehicle was put in reverse and began to accelerate towards police, almost striking officers and a patrol vehicle,” the released stated.

“The vehicle then continued to evade at high rate of speed, at points driving into oncoming traffic and attempting to make contact with patrol vehicles.”

Police said the driver resisted arrest and assaulted an officer once the vehicle, which officers learned had been stolen from Yorkton, was stopped.

The other vehicle was stolen from a business in the 800 block of 43rd Street East. It was later found abandoned and running in the 200 block of Avenue N South, according to police.

The 31-year-old driver of the Yorkton vehicle is charged with four counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, assaulting a peace officer, dangerous driving, evading police, possessing stolen property over $5,000, and possessing ammunition contrary to a prohibition order.
