Ford to release info on new low-cost electric vehicle on August 11

One of these will likely be a mid-sized electric pickup truck

Ford plans to release more information about its upcoming low-cost electric vehicle (EV) at an event in Kentucky on August 11.

This announcement comes after it was revealed that Ford’s EV division posted a loss of US$1.3 billion (about C$1.8 billion CAD) in the second quarter of 2025. This loss is due to the declining sales of Ford’s top EVs and issues brought about by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

Since Ford’s initial announcement in February 2024 about developing a new low-cost EV, little has been revealed about the project.

The only information released regarding these new EVs prior to the event is that they will be mid-sized pickup trucks set to release in 2027, coming in multiple vehicle styles to meet the needs of both retail and commercial consumers.

A 2027 release date for a more affordable EV model couldn’t get any closer, especially in the current EV market, where even some of the cheapest models will set you back around $40,000.

Further, Ford isn’t the only company considering a mid-sized pickup truck. Tesla is also apparently planning a smaller pickup after the Cybertruck failed, and Jeff Bezos-backed Slate is stirring up the auto industry with its upcoming small, affordable electric truck.
